ACADEMY MUESUM
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures was designed by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop and opened in 2021.
The design transforms a Streamline Moderne style department store from 1939 by removing a 1946 addition and replacing in with the lobby and vertical circulation. The architects added the 1000 seat David Geffen spherical theater connected by bridges with a glass covered rooftop gathering space.
The museum tells the story of films and filmmakers through its exhibits. The contrast between old and new is dramatic inviting comparison with films and engaging the visitors.
Nearby you’ll find actor Danny Trejo’s restaurant in the Farmers’ Market. Definitely see this museum when you are in Los Angeles.
