SUMIDA HOKUSAI MUSEUM

In Tokyo SANAA co-founder Kazuyo Sejima designed the Sumida Hokusai Museum that opened in 2016.

The building stores and displays the work of the wood block artist Katsushika Hokusai. The four story museum is covered with reflective aluminum panels that are cut away and folded to allow indirect light into the interior with metal mesh covering some of the glazing. The form like the artist’s work, invites multiple interpretations. Is it folded paper or a carved block?

Try Chill Out Coffee & Records for a coffee and some music from their turntable.
